Sometimes, I wonder why it is that I take on extra work outside of my job. Is it because I like the extra cash? Is it because I enjoy writing? Is it because I just want to keep my pen flowing and not get rusty?

I have never known exactly when it was that I first fell in love with writing. My love affair with words is easier to track - it started when my extremely formidable mother got me hooked on books when I was just a wee kid trundling around with smudged cheeks and dirty kneecaps. She took me to libraries and book fairs and splurged on educational books. When alone at home with nothing to do, I read. And read.

It started with fairy tales and then progressed on to fables and encyclopedias on astronomy. That led to my fascination with all things astronomical, from nebulas to planets to stars.

Along the way, I picked up the pencil and started crafting my first sentences and before I knew it, the words just started flowing smoothly and quickly. I never had a problem with writing compositions in primary school, it was more a matter of how well I would do. I kept my own diaries for years, writing everywhere - on buses, in lectures, on my bed at home.

At 10, I knew I was going to be a writer. At 16, I told my teacher I would be going into the media industry when I grew up and here I am today.

Sitting at Killiney Kopitiam one afternoon after work while waiting for a gym class to start, I started work on one of my articles armed with nothing but pen and paper. And I astonished myself by completing almost half the article in less than an hour using the good ‘ol way of writing. Despite not having a keyboard to tapity tap long or the Internet to do my research, the words just kept coming.

It felt good.

The best thing about this is that while it is technically a job, writing will never be work for me. It feels natural, as if I was meant to be doing it, and it feels fun. The sense of satisfaction in seeing my byline and a job well done is tremendous.

Now all I need is to wait it out before planning the next step of my life.
