Four years ago, almost to the day, I wrote about a book which had left me completely enthralled and intrigued. Audrey Niffenegger’s The Time Traveler’s Wife made me smile and it made me cry and I have carried a torch for it ever since.
Four years later, Hollywood’s adaptation has finally been completed. Starring Rachel McAdams as Clare and Eric Bana as the time travelling Henry, the news of the movie had made me ponder about how I would feel about seeing these characters on screen. It sounds mildly obsessive but it honestly pains me to see my favourite books mangled on the big screen (Harry Potter, anyone?). Elegant, flowing prose and a lively imagination can sometimes be a better companion than the loud explosions of Hollywood.
But from the looks of the trailer, I can honestly say that I am thrilled and looking forward to the movie. The casting is perfect – McAdams looks beautifully luminous and fragile and strong, all at the same time, while Bana is a compelling mix of masculinity and pain. I’m hoping that the movie won’t be a soppy, watery affair but will, instead, express the complexities of the De Tambles’ relationship and the intelligent writing of Niffenegger.

I read this book a couple of months ago 🙂 And i actually love seeing film interpretations of books (for better or worse)
I also read that Rachel McAdams was the ONLY actress considered for the role. She brings a somewhat ‘The Notebook’ quality to it, pretty fitting I thot!
And Eric Bana…. you’re right, he is a great blend of masculinity + sensitivity (think Troy).

i am ashamed to say that i abandoned the book halfway. i know it’s a great story but i couldn’t wait until the end. Plus i think i knew how it ended so i lost the motivation to read it. i would love to see the move though!!!

I totally utterly love this book. Cried so badly at the end. Can’t wait for the movie (though I’ll probably have to watch it on DVD because of the missy :/)!

I felt the book to be so beautifully unusual, intelligent and moving that I have to admit I’m a little nervous about seeing this on film.
I have some hesitations about Rachel McAdams, if only because she seems too sweet and cute, and I felt the novel portrayed Clare as someone more gritty and earthy than conventionally beautiful. I also hope they don’t make the romance too schmaltzy Grey’s Anatomy style with soaring orchestral pieces and dialogue that’s just a bit too clever to be believed, because theirs just wasn’t an ordinary romance, was it?
Having said that, this looks gorgeous, and I can’t wait to see how they pull off the scene in The Cage, which was the most haunting scene of all to me.

hello! the book was such a riveting read, I read it twice and it’s now my official favourite cos it’s so bittersweet and believable. Was not very optimistic about the film though, but I watched Rachel Mcadams in The Notebook and I think she would make for a great Clare. 🙂
Am crossing my fingers that the film won’t disappoint, the trailer looks promising!

I love the book! It’s heart wrenching and you could absolutely feel the love they had for each other through the pages. I’ve probably read it three to four times…
Rachel Mcadams should make a great Clare. Similar demeanour… Can’t wait for the movie! 🙂

@ Hannah I know, I am hoping that it won’t be a drabby, soppy affair that’s just out to bring on the waterworks because the love story is so much more than that.
@ Miss Pot It can be confusing, I know! But it’s a good read if you cast aside all logic.
@ Dawn I loved how real their relationship is. It’s not all honey and sweetness but gritty and realistic.
@ Furla Heh heh you can watch with HY and then sob into his sleeves. I think I will be sobbing into Jimmy’s shirt.
